TQS to Eliminate News Programming

Remstar, future owners of TQS, announced that it plans to eliminate the channel's entire news programming by September.  It will be applying to the CRTC for a transfer of licence, and will also ask for its licence to be modified, allowing it to broadcast without any obligation to provide news programming (Cartt, 04/24/2008).

TQS's licence requires it to produce at least 14 hours of news each week.  The channel currently airs 28 hours of news, but plans to gradually reduce that number while waiting for CRTC's approval (Broadcast Dialogue, 04/24/2008).  Starting June 2, TQS will broadcast only two news programs and will eliminate its network-wide morning news and current affairs program, "Cafeine."  It plans to end news production completely by the end of September (Cartt, 04/24/2008).

The money saved by cutting out news programs will help TQS eliminate its deficit and allow it to reinvest in the production of cultural and entertainment programs (Cartt, 04/24/2008).
