Shaw Applies for New Sports Specialty Channel Licence

Shaw Communications Inc. has applied to the CRTC for a new specialty channel licence called Shaw Media Sports.

In a notice of consultation announced Friday, the CRTC published Shaw's application for a standard Category 2 specialty channel. The application describes the proposed channel as a mainstream sports specialty service.

Announced in the same consultation, Astral Broadcasting Group Inc. has applied for two new French-language, Category 2 specialty channel licences for services called Investigation and Tendances.

The company says Investigation would air programming "devoted to exploring justice and forensic science: legal and police investigations, fraud and swindling, espionage, major trials, procedures, legal firms, coroners, forensic pathology, etc."

Tendences would run content "devoted to the themes of fashion, beauty care, trends, design, society, etc.," the application says.

Category 2 licences require the broadcaster to negotiate carriage agreements with cable and satellite distributors.

The CRTC consultation includes other broadcasting applications from Wild TV Inc., Greek National Television Network (Canada) Inc., Ethnic Channels Group Ltd., and others.

The deadline for public comments is Feb. 28. A hearing is scheduled for April 1.
