CANADA'S ONLY RETAIL TV COMMERCIAL AWARDS COMPETITION

Now in its 41st year, the TVB Retail Commercial Awards are still Canada's only commercials competition judged solely by consumers. We are dedicated to finding the best local television advertising in Canada.

HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

 

Canadian consumer panels judge the commercials based on motivation and enjoyment. Commercials are judged outside their home market, when possible, to minimize pre-existing consumer bias.


The results of the judging session determine the winning commercials.

Once the winners have been announced the certificates will be mailed. The winners book is then also available online.
 

WHO MAY ENTER?

We accept entries (English or French) from retailers, agencies, advertisers, production houses and Canadian television stations.

$125.00 + applicable taxes
 

ELIGIBILITY OF COMMERCIALS

  1. Think Local. Advertising for businesses which meet the following criteria will be accepted into the RCA competition:
    • The business must be engaged in the direct sales of goods or services to the general public.
      i.e advertising for an automotive dealer would be accepted, advertising for an automotive manufacturer would not be accepted.
    • The organization's or business's market must be local in nature. Therefore, the message is market-specific, or limited to a small number of markets.

      Please note: Advertising for national retailers or national advertisers will only be accepted if the commercial message is clearly location or market specific (e.g. a Best Buy commercial created specifically to support locations in Vancouver would be accepted; a Best Buy commercial supporting a sale across all locations would not be accepted.)

     

  2. Each entry must have been telecast in Canada between September 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011.
  3. Commercials entered must have been originally created by a Canadian station, agency, advertiser or production company, and not have been entered in any previous TVB retail competitions.
  4. Lip-sync/voice-over adaptations or stock footage commercials are not eligible, including tagged versions of national ads.
  5. Dealer tag commercials are not eligible.
  6. Manufacturers or distributors with a local business footprint are eligible.
  7. Eligible commercials must not exceed two minutes in length

FORMAT

All entries must be compressed in H.264 Quicktime (.mov) or MPEG-2 (.mpg) format, with one second of black preceding the spot.

Submissions that include colour bars, slates or company logos will not be accepted.

When completing your registration online, you will be asked if you intend to submit your commercials using an FTP server, or by sending a data CD/data DVD. We will not accept tapes or DVD video discs.

FTP Submissions
If you are using your company's ftp server, please provide your server login information to rca@tvb.ca.

If your company does not have an ftp server, please contact
rca@tvb.ca for login information.

*Please note: All registrants using TVB's ftp server will have access to the drive and its contents. However, the submissions will be removed, daily, by TVB.

Please ensure that files are renamed as:

YEAR_TITLE_ADVERTISER_REGISTRANTFIRSTNAME.mpg/mov

If you are submitting multiple commercials, please compress/zip all files into a folder labeled with the registrant's name before uploading.

Data CD/DVD Submissions

This competition is for individual commercials only.

TVB reserves final judgment regarding commercial eligibility and category assignment. All entries received will be retained in the TVB library for educational purposes.

AWARDS

The Consumers' Choice award will be given to the top spot out of all stations and agency submissions.

 

  • The top 10 commercials will be awarded, and recognized, at SAC 2012.

1st - Gold
2nd - Silver
3rd - Bronze

The remaining finalists, within the top ten, will receive framed certificates.

  • The top spot from each market, A, B and C, will be awarded a framed gold certificate.

    Market definitions are as follows (using BBM EMA data):

  • The top spot from each category will receive a certificate by mail.

Credits on awards and certificates will include the title of the commercial, the advertiser and the station/company name.
