Now in its 39th year, the TVB Retail Commercial Awards are still Canada's only commercials competition judged solely by consumers. We're dedicated to finding the best Canadian retail television advertising.
HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS
We define retail as the direct sale of products or services to the general public. For example, a lottery corporation commercial is not retail. However, a commercial advertising sales at a lottery kiosk would be considered a retail spot.
Consumer panels from across Canada judge the commercials based on motivation and enjoyment. Commercials are judged outside their home market when possible to minimize pre-existing consumer bias. Cumulative scores are then tabulated, with a weighting of 60% for enjoyment and 40% for motivation. Generally, following this first round of judging, one-third of entries advance to round two. New consumers are selected for the second judging session, after which we tabulate the scores again. The results of both judging sessions are averaged in order to determine the winning commercials.
TVB provides everyone who enters with a personalized results sheet, listing their spots and individual scores. Once winners have been announced, Winners Books, certificates and the consumer panel reports are mailed to all participants.
TVB's Digital Resource Centre compiles an annual Viewers' Choice Reel, with all the top category and overall best-scoring spots together on a reel. It's an invaluable research tool and available by contacting Tanisha Jhuman at tjhuman@tvb.ca
