Portugal Delays Analogue Switch Off

The first phase of the Portuguese analogue switch off will be delayed according to reports from the national governmental association for communications ANACOM.

The areas of Alenquer, Cacem and Nazare will not enjoy the switch over in February 2011 as originally expected but instead will make the switch in May 2011 according to 'Tele Satelite'.

The country's analogue switch is targeted to be switched off nationally on 26 April 2012. Some experts have complained about the lack of real action that the Portuguese government has undertaken with regards to DTT implementation. The government has been criticised for seemingly not wanting to damage the interests of pay-TV operators such as Zon or Meo. However, ultimately Portugal will have to implement DTT as the European Commission has obliged all member states to do so.
