The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) asked that Industry Canada establish a government/industry working group to oversee the implementation of an effective and consumer focused digital TV transition with representatives from broadcasters, BDUs, the electronic industry, and the responsible government departments and agencies. An estimated 3 million analog TV sets in Canada are not compatible with digital signals and not connected to cable or satellite.
The analog shutdown date in Canada is August 31, 2011, and negotiations with the U.S. to finalize the Canada/U.S. agreement on the DTV transition are almost completed. The ability of private broadcasters to apply to Industry Canada for permanent DTV transmitters depends on the outcome of these negotiations. There are more than 750 over-the-air analog TV transmitters in our country.
