Hawaii Switches to Digital

The state of Hawaii switched off its analog TV signals on January 15, 2009 at noon.  Chris Leonard, president of the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters, said that call centers received around 500 calls by 5:30pm that day, with about 200 of them coming before the noon shutoff.  Some areas reported signal troubles, which led to a high concentration of calls from those regions, while other areas that were considered problematic are handling the transition smoothly.

The association handled as many as 900 calls the week leading up to the digital switchover, clearing up what Leonard hopes were the bulk of problems among viewers.  A series of community events over the next two weeks will further clarify issues.  Hawaii benefited from switching to digital early because it meant extra attention from the FCC.
