Financial Results for Broadcasting Distributors

 

According to data from the CRTC, cable, direct-to-home (DTH), satellite distribution and multipoint distribution system (MDS) companies enjoyed substantial growth between 2006 and 2007.

 

Cable

Total revenues for cable companies grew by 16.1% between 2006 and 2007, increasing from $6.1 billion to $7.1 billion.  The number of basic cable subscribers rose from 7.48 million to 7.65 million, representing a 2.3% growth.

 

DTH and MDS

Between 2006 and 2007, combined revenues for DTH and MDS companies rose 11.4% from $1.7 billion to $1.85 billion.  The number of subscribers edged up just 0.1% to 2.6 million.

 

Contributions

In 2007, contributions to Canadian programming made by broadcast distribution companies totaled $286.7 million, up 8.4% from 2006.  Of the 2007 total, $155.3 million went to the Canadian Television Fund, $38.4 million went to independent funds, and $103 million went to local expression, such as community channels. 

 

Affiliation Payments
Cable companies directed $1.4 billion to affiliates in 2007, including pay and specialty services, a growth of 10.4% compared to the previous year.  Payments made by DTH and MDS companies to their affiliates also increased by 12.3% between 2006 and 2007, jumping from $620.3 million to $696.6 million.
