CRTC Rejects Sun TV's Category 1 Application

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commisssion has rejected Quebecor's application for a Category 1 Licence for Sun TV.

The CRTC announced in March 2010 it would not consider new Category 1 Licences until October 2011 -- following the completition of the digital transition.

There are immediate options available to Quebecor to apply for a Cat 2 specialty licence creating a digital specialty channel or for Sun TV to remain as an OTA operation and simply change its programming to an all news format.

The CRTC will still consider an application for a Cat 1 licence, for Sun TV, however this will be delayed until after October 2011. At that time the CRTC will revise Cat 1 (Cat A) licences and Sun TV can file an application for a Cat A licence.
