CRTC Extends Deadline by 17 Months for New TV Service Applications

To help the broadcasting industry adapt to "significant changes," the CRTC announced that it will delay by 17 months the deadline for applications for new "must carry" Category A television services.

Category A television services have "must carry" status, meaning the broadcast distributors are required to carry them.

The previous CRTC deadline for broadcasters to submit applications for new Category A services was April 1, 2010. That date has also been pushed to Aug. 31, 2011.

The CRTC's consideration of the Category A applications is now scheduled for October 2011.

The Category A was created in 2008 when the Commission combined specialty analog channels and Category 1 services.

The Comedy Network, History Television and Showcase are Category A services.

In October 2011, the Commission will also review the appropriateness of licensing new Category A services in the context of the digital environment.
