CRTC Approves Specialty Channel Licence Amendments

The CRTC approved licence amendments Wednesday for eight specialty television channels with ownership stakes by Canwest Media Inc., TVA Group Inc. and Rogers Communications Inc.

The licence amendments will allow the eight channels - Mystery TV, TVtropolis, Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada, History Television, The Independent Film Channel, Discovery Health Channel and Slice - to choose programming from a wider list of categories.

Mystery TV, a Category 1 channel owned by Canwest and TVA, can now draw 10 per cent of its monthly programming from the professional sports and music video categories.

The channel typically offers programming in the suspense, espionage and mystery genres.

As a result of a licence change, TVtropolis, an analog specialty channel owned by Canwest and Rogers, can also devote 10 per cent of its monthly programming to professional sports and music videos.

The channel focuses on dramatic and comedic shows aimed at adults over 50.

As of Sept. 1, 2011, Category 1 and analog specialty channels will be known as Category A in accordance with the CRTC's television policy framework established last March.

In that framework, the commission said it will let all Category A services draw from programming in all genres within a 10 per cent monthly limit.
