Community Television Represents Tiny Share of TV Market

Community television makes up a tiny share of the Canadian television market, according to statistics released by the CRTC.

In advance of the commission's review of the community television sector, with a week of hearings starting April 26, the CRTC released the market share numbers for three of the largest community television operators in Canada.

During the broadcast year Sept. 1 2008 to Aug. 31 2009, Rogers Cable Communications Inc. operated 30 community television channels that reached 0.2 per cent viewing share of the Canadian English-language television market.

Shaw Communications Inc. operated 33 community television channels in Western Canada, reaching a 0.1 per cent share of the Canadian English-language television market.

Videotron Ltd. operated six community television channels in Quebec, reaching a 0.1 per cent viewing share for the Quebec French-language market.
