Canada's Digital Transition

The analog TV shutdown date in Canada is August 31, 2011.  Here is what our country is doing to prepare for it:

Initiatives

  • Industry Canada sent a letter to retailers telling them to inform customers that newly-purchased analog receivers will require set-top boxes if they are used for over-the-air (OTA) reception after 2011 (Broadcast Dialogue, 02/28/2008).

  • Industry Canada placed ads in border areas notifying the public that OTA U.S. analog signals will disappear in February 2009 (Broadcast Dialogue, 02/28/2008).

  • A consumer advisory website about the analog shutdown has been created at the Industry Canada website (Broadcast Dialogue, 02/28/2008).
