CRTC Approves CanWest's Purchase of Alliance Stations

On December 20, 2007, the CRTC approved CanWest MediaWork's acquisition of the broadcasting channels owned by Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting Inc. (13 networks). CanWest will hold 35% of the total equity investment and 66 2/3% of the voting shares of CanWest Investments, while Goldman Sachs Capital Partners (US) will hold the rest. CanWest has to merge its existing broadcasting properties into CanWest Investments by 2011, thereby increasing its investment to over 50%. The CRTC is satisfied that these companies will remain under Canadian control at all times. CanWest will allocate $136.6 million to programming initiatives (Canadian drama, documentaries, and news and public affairs).
